Gising na, Pilipinas Kong Mahal

Posted in Own Story, philippines, Politics with tags , , , on March 19, 2010 by annepotz

Magtiwala tayo at wag masyadong maging reklamador.

On Expensive Political Advertisements

I wonder where Senator Manny Villar is getting his funds to pay his political ads on television, prints and radio. Well, to some it may not be so surprising, (for we all know that he’s a business tycoon and a billionaire) but apparently the expenditures are so alarming, it has reached more or less P700 million pesos at this point in time, and the official campaign period has not yet started. What more if the campaign period is launched?

He’s really determined to win. He even used the veteran actor, Dolphy to endorse him in one of his political advertisement. Did he really know Villar personally? Totaling all his expenditures in media ads plus the talent fees of every celebrity that he uses in it, the total value will be much bigger than the number of families that are below the poverty line. In addition, he has also exceeded the 120 minutes given to every candidate during the campaign period. Where’s the fairness?

Okay, he’s wealthy. He can use all the money he wants in those ads, but the point is, it is too much. If we try to picture this, he wins the Presidential election, will he acquire all his expenditures from the public fund? Will he use his power as the president so that his business prospects and properties will expand more?

Manny Villar is a businessman. Business people never invest a bunch of their money into something that they will not benefit from. Businessmen always want a win-win situation. They will do whatever it takes to have a good profit. And from what I see, Villar will try even harder to be in the presidential seat, by spending more for those ads.

And I am not impressed by his famous campaign jingle. If you are sincere in helping the nation, be a role model. How can you spend millions and billions if you worked hard for it? A worker who works hard for a little amount of money will be so thrifty enough and wise in spending it. In his case, he throws all “his” money out for his campaign drive, I think it’s a desperate move. If not for the C5 controversy, he would’ve been my presidential bet.

Media can be a great vehicle in campaigning, but voters must be more meticulous in choosing their bet in the appointment of the next head of the nation. These political ads can be very tricky. It can be a façade to a candidate’s real intention; it is a theater where they can leap from being a politician to an actor. We must not be deceived by the candidate’s charming smile and sparkling eyes. Vote wisely, our future depends on it.

Pait ng Asukal ni Gloria

“As demand increases the price goes up which attracts new suppliers who increase the supply bringing the price back to normal.” –LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND

I’m Dreaming of a Clean Election

“Jamming devices may delay transmission of election results, but could not alter the votes.” –SMARTMATIC

Do you think the 2010 Elections will be clean and cheat-free? I don’t think so, when we are talking about the Philippines. SMARTMATIC may always inform that the technology that they are providing for the 2010 Elections is cheat-free, I till doubt it. The fact that results will be delayed is not an assurance that there will be no hocus focus in the number of votes. Well come on, did they not perceive this problem before?

How do jamming devices work? Jamming devices overpower by transmitting a signal on the same frequency and at a high enough power that the two signals collide and cancel each other out. The machines to be used by SMARTMATIC will utilize a network signal for the transmission of the results. So, if the signal will be jammed, there will be delay and delay means…you know what happens next. Long delays usually will enable these politicians to manipulate the votes, well, maybe by means of forcing and all that.

The system is still on testing fields, three months away before the 2010 Elections. It is very Filipino. Rush, rush, rush!  There will be a great rush and voila! I know that we need to upgrade the voting system, we must be vigilant. We must familiarize ourselves with the new system of voting for the country’s future depends on who’ll be elected. Ignorance is not good during this time. We must be aware, open our eyes on what we can do.

Sometimes it is very annoying when you hear people say, “Bahala na..” This attitude must be eliminated, not tomorrow, but now, for a better Philippines.

THE SIN-NATE OF THE PHILIPPINES

Posted in Politics with tags , , on February 4, 2010 by annepotz

I am an ordinary citizen of the republic. I just watch the news, read the papers and see famous faces in the political world, not caring what their business is about. For all I care, it’s politics, what is it to me, anyway? But then, just recently, I got so interested in the things happening around. The circulating news in the country became so alarming, maybe not to all, but to few people like me. Or perhaps, we should be alarmed and so watchful, the 2010 elections is on May already.

I was watching a late night documentary show in a channel, tackling about the Senate’s functions and responsibilities in our government. Thus, I came to understand more. I can say I am not-so-familiar with the duties of the Senate of the Republic of the Philippines, well maybe most of the Filipino people.  Let me give you an overview of the Senate.

The Senate is a training ground for future leaders, a springboard to the presidential seat.  It has a broader outlook in the problems of the country, rather than being restricted by NARROW VIEWPOINTS AND INTERESTS.  The Senate must be PRUDENT and LESS IMPULSIVE.

But what is happening right now? Senators tend to politicize more rather than ratify laws and investigate serious issues. They were elected by the people to do their jobs, not for their own personal interests. They are public servants. They should reach out to the people and they can do that by being LESS IMPULSIVE, and not act like a wild animal for all the people to see. They must be PRUDENT. What do we mean by being prudent? Prudent means using a good judgment to consider likely consequences and act accordingly.

You see a bunch of Senators walking out from the plenary hall, absenting themselves, boycotting the truth, babbling things, cursing. Are these the people we should vote for to rule the country? Are they capable of doing their functions well? The qualifications of a senator go hand-in-hand with a good attitude and a “delicadeza”.  You are a public figure. You must give your citizens what is due to them.  You are a role model. You must act accordingly. I mean yes, change must always come from ourselves, but we are influenced by people, most likely by the politicians. How can you start the change we need, if you see leaders acting like this? It’s being so childish. To think most of them graduated in well-respected schools and universities. We didn’t vote for you to sit, walkout and absent.

The people deserve to know the truth. And all you do is boycott the session or rather walk out. Tell me why I do need to vote this kind of people. Tell me that they are the leaders that could bring a GOOD CHANGE to our dying country. Tell me why they continue to do these mediocre in front of the Filipino people. Tell me why the 14th Senate was able to pass 57 legislations/laws  ONLY.

The main reason is they tend to politicize more rather than doing their duties as a Senator. You see?  Time flies and it is Election Day again. Look into the people who are more qualified to the position. The passion and dedication to the Filipino people are far more important than their achievements in their academics. Let us not make another Sin-nate, but a good Senatorial body that will uphold the duties and responsibilities.

The Senate is not a theater. We don’t need some comical skits. We want change, and it will start this 2010 elections, or so I hope.
